Culture Week

This week we have been finding out about Sri Lanka in Class 2.

Today we have made tea because they grow tea leaves in Sri Lanka.

We have found out about Sri Lanka from photographs taken in Sri Lanka, then drawn pictures and written words or sentences to show what we have found out, inside an outline map of the island.

Limes grow on trees in Sri Lanka. We have used some limes to make a Sri Lankan lime drink.

Sometimes in Sri Lanka, large groups of people sit down to eat together, using banana tree leaves as plates.

We ate samosas and drank the lime drink we had made.

Joseph's parents came to talk to us about Sri Lanka and we enjoyed finding out by asking questions. They brought the banana leaves and samosas for us to enjoy. Thank you to you both!

We had a great week finding out about Sri Lanka...

Making a castle hanging!

We have started to make a castle hanging. The children have chosen which item they would like to create for the hanging, drawn it and chosen their fabrics. Then the children pinned their patterns to their fabrics!

Some of us have even cut our fabric to the shape of the pattern!

Today we have been adding stitching to bring our designs to life.

What great concentration!

Finding out about houses in the past

Class 2 have been finding out about houses 110 years ago and 70 years ago. The BBC website has both Dynamo History about Victorian Times and also World War 2 Children information.

We have written notes to help us to write some information texts.

World Book Day

We have been sharing favourite books with children from other classes.

Chilling out with a book...

We wrote fact files about our favourite books so that we can see which are similar to others and then we drew and painted our front covers. We will put them on display to remind us of other books we may like to read.

Drama in preparation for writing

We have been acting out the story of 'Peepo' by the Ahlbergs.

Then we added speech bubbles to help us with our writing...

We will let you know what happens next!

Class 2 make soup!

Today Class 2 have made soups in groups, to warm them up on this cold day!

Earlier in the week they prepared and tasted different vegetables to decide which ones they wanted to put in their soups. They also tried a smooth soup and a chunky soup to decide which style of soup they wanted.

Finishing the recipes...

Then we prepared our vegetables. This was the first time that many of the children had peeled and chopped onions!

Stirring time...

More chopping!

Some groups decided that they needed to add more water before they liquidised their soups.

After that we blended the soups...

It was wonderful soup! Yum! Yum!

Now we are thinking about how we could improve our soups if we made them another time...
We had great fun!

Visitors from Finland!

Today we have had visitors who used to live in Finland. Finland is another cold country. When it is cold the school children have skating lessons for PE. They sometimes have to ski across country instead of walking!
